Azeez confirms he has quit as Tabung Haji chairman

He says the letter was submitted to the fund's legal department on May 14.

Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim says he respected the new government’s decision that no politician should hold any positions in government-linked companies, including Lembaga Tabung Haji.

PETALING JAYA: Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim has tendered his resignation as the Lembaga Tabung Haji chairman.

His contract was supposed to end in July next year, Star Online reported.

Azeez said his letter was submitted to the fund’s legal department on May 14.

“My legal team will send the letter out to the respective departments once the minister responsible (for Tabung Haji) is appointed,” he said.

Azeez said he respected the new government’s decision that no politician should hold any positions in government-linked companies, including Lembaga Tabung Haji.

Earlier today, Azeez, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member, had confirmed with Bernama that Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers had “visited” his houses and office yesterday.

He said that part of the RM500,000 they took was to finance a mission to Gaza, Palestine, that he had planned.

Another portion of the money taken by MACC officers, who had come to his houses in Baling, Kedah, and Subang, Selangor, and his office on Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, was meant for the Baling Umno division to be given to the constituents for Ramadan and Aidilfitri, he said.

The mission to Gaza was planned for after the general election on May 9, he said when contacted by Bernama.

Azeez also said that besides the cash, the MACC officers also seized watches and some foreign currency.

“The MACC officers were very professional. I will extend my fullest cooperation to the MACC in carrying out its investigation,” he said.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki confirmed the raids and seizure of RM500,000 from the three locations.

The investigation was being conducted under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009 for receipt of gratification.

Perlis MACC director Mohd Shukor Mahmud confirmed that a search was conducted at Azeez’s house in Taman Bemban, Kupang, Kedah, and the MP community service centre at Batu 42, Pulai, also in Kedah, last night.
